Putting it in perspective After almost 2 days, I finally got power back. While I have always been empathetic to those who become victims of hurricanes, I think the last 48 hours have given me a much better understanding of what actually happens. We definitely didn't have it nearly as bad as a hurricane victim...regardless of what some may say. The weather cooperated and it has been cool and sunny, as opposed to humid and rainy. We didn't have to deal with flooding at all, just lots of wind damage. Ultimately, the worst thing that happened was that this storm was completely unexpected. Yes, it was inconvenient to not have power and lose most of my food. But unlike most that go through this, I actually had the luxury of driving to my job and having electricity for the work day. Other than a bunch of cleaning up of fallen tree branches, I suffered no damage, and all of my family and friends are accounted for and alive. I just think about what it must be like to have your home flooded/damaged by a hurricane and then not even having electricity to start cleaning up. It may take a few months for some of the things that were heavily damaged to be repaired around here, but considering what I saw last November in New Orleans, 2 years after Katrina, that's nothing.

Out of Touch An update for everyone. If you're not living in the Cincinnati Area, you may not be aware that we were hit with some of Hurrican Ike. That hit was basically 60-75 mi hour gusts and sustained winds of 30-40, I'm guessing. These winds lasted for 4+ hours and took down lots of trees, wires, etc. Almost 900,000 people lost power to some extent, and it's obviously going to take some time to get it back. I keep hoping mine will be back soon, but alas, not thus far. I've lost most of my food...managed to take some to my work refrigerator, and love trying to keep Twizzle away from the candles.

Learned something new today I've been on vacation all week, and have been trying to take care of some things in the mornings before heading to the pool. This morning, I scheduled a dental appointment, in which I was getting a filling and starting a crown. I ended up needing 4 shots of novocaine before I couldn't feel anything for the area where the crown was to be done. No problems and headed to the pool. At this point, the right half of my face is completely numb...not thinking much of it. I jump into the pool upon arrival and plan to swim a few laps...at which point the learning happened! It's hard to swim when you can't feel most of your mouth 8-) Apparently, I wasn't keeping my mouth closed when I thought I was, and I kept getting water in my mouth. I then was trying to blow it out and sounded like a little kid just learning to blow bubbles. So I swam 2 laps with my face above water and decided I wasn't going to push my luck. The rest of the time in the pool was spent either floating on my back or treading (had to get in some exercise).

Opening Day of a different sort To some people in town, Opening Day means baseball. To me, it means the opening of the Root Beer Stand. I unfortunately did not make it there on opening day, but I made it there 2 days later. Yummy! Enjoyed a footlong hot dog, bag of popcorn and a frosty mug of root beer. I also bought a half gallon to take home with me, and I'm enjoying another frosty mug as I type this. Twizzle also has tasted root beer for the first time and appears to enjoy it, as I had to remove the mug from in front of his face. :-)

Need to Rant Yes, I'm a female who likes sports. I really enjoy college basketball and will watch any good game that's one (and some that aren't so good if it's a team I follow). My rant is this: REFS! There is a rule called traveling....call it! In almost any game I watch, players will take 4-5 steps without dribbling the ball (and they are in control of the ball). This is most often seen while heading toward the basket. Sometimes, the player has been completely stopped, pivot foot planted, can't find someone to pass to and just takes some giant strides and the turnover doesn't get called. I most often see it called when the player is rolling around on the ground.
My other rant is people not being able to make free throws. Games are lost because players tank. I know people get tired, but sheesh. IMO, people should be able to hit 85% at all times.
Now, back to regular programming.

Name Thing
| What Laura Means | You are relaxed, chill, and very likely to go with the flow. You are light hearted and accepting. You don't get worked up easily. Well adjusted and incredibly happy, many people wonder what your secret to life is.
You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection. You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive. You have the classic "Type A" personality.
You are a very lucky person. Things just always seem to go your way. And because you're so lucky, you don't really have a lot of worries. You just hope for the best in life. You're sometimes a little guilty of being greedy. Spread your luck around a little to people who need it.
You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something. You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense. You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun. |

Return to New Orleans 2 weeks ago, I went on vacation to New Orleans. This is the first time I had been back since Katrina. Over all, it was a great week. I couldn't ask for better weather, as it was in the mid to upper 70s. Every morning for breakfast, I would have cafe au lait and beignets....yummy. Our first hotel was on the Riverwalk, so I'd then go exercise/walk along the river. Many stores in the quarter are still around, though there were some that we missed. Not related to the hurricane were the disappearance of Virgin Records and Tower Records. Most likely related to Katrina was the disappearance of the Magic Bus...a favorite used record store. But my favorite used record store was still there, and just as we remembered, except for the lack of the cranky old owner, who apparently still owns the place but hasn't returned to live in NOLA. Food was fabulous, and we were very happy to see that Lucy's Retired Surfer's Bar was still around and doing a lively business. A great place to go, especially if you don't want to be in touristy places. A new adventure was dinner at Mother's. Good old southern food at a very reasonable prices. MMM MMM.
Toward the end of the week, we rented a car to drive around both New Orleans and to head west for more sight-seeing. ( Read more )

Musical Interludes It's been pretty much a musical drought for me this year for attending concerts. Bands I like aren't touring, or don't come near here, or other things get in the way. Considering how much of my life used to revolve around music, not going to shows is a bit sad for me. But this week it was a different story. On Tuesday, I went to see They Might Be Giants at the Southgate House. It had been years since I'd seen them and I had been looking forward to the show. It was a great one...sold out, and smoke free! I didn't come home smelling like a chimney. And I came home with the vinyl of their new album....ah, how I love new vinyl. I also stopped in upstairs at the Southgate to see Scott, who is running a weekly karaoke night. Not only did I get to see him hard at work, but he also did a song while I was there, and that was a treat, never having heard him sing.
Thursday night brought me back to the Southgate for Robyn Hitchcock. I had never seen him live before, so it was a treat. Love the stories he tells between songs, and of course, he's a great musician. Met up with misskitty2 and cockneyrebel for the show, saw lots of other Woxy and Randomville boarders, which was a treat. Also ran into many more co-workers than I ever thought I would. And it was yet another smoke-free show, which was an added bonus.

The Weekend in Review--Ugh, Ouch, Grr, Aah So Labor Day weekend has come and gone.
I had to work (luckily from home), but I spend the majority of my nights running reports and setting up new properties for everyone to start using on Tues. Because the server I normally connect to mysteriously disappeared on Mon afternoon, I had to take a roundabout way into our network and experienced considerable lagtime...to the tune of not finishing the properties until 3:30 am on Tues morn. UGH.
AHH. The days were sunny (that's a shocker here in Ohio, considering recent weather ;-) ) and I spent them at the pool with my pool crush. I even have pictures. I also fell asleep at the pool on Sun, which meant I missed the festivities at Chez cockneyrebel and misskitty2, the biggest disappointment of the weekend. Have also enjoyed watching all the sexy male tennis players run around at the US Open.
My pool crush knows what buttons to push and push them he did. "Don't look now but that guard is up in the chair text-messaging." Off I went to yell at said guard. Couldn't believe she was up in the chair messaging when the pool was full of people. GRRR
Besides the guard episode, there were 2 other mishaps at the pool. No I didn't lose my top again! Saturday, I was minding my own business laying on my stomach reading a book. A bug landed on my back and I swatted at it, thinking it was a fly. It landed again, and again, I swatted at it, but this time, it chose to sting me! (Maybe that was payback for yelling at the guard??) So I jumped up and looked at my poor finger. Found the stinger, couldn't scrape it out (you should never tweezer), finally got it out and then went and got ice so it wouldn't swell too much. It was right on the joint of my middle finger, and thus I had a reason to give people the finger throughout the rest of the weekend since I couldn't bend that joint. Now it only hurts if I use a pen/pencil since that rests right where I got stung. Part 2, same scenario...Sunday. Criss-crossing my legs/feet while reading on my stomach. Rubbed feet together...ouch. Got up, found yet another stinger in soul of foot. Got it out. Pool crush arrived, said he got stung playing golf that morning. Found a black hornet in a towel he'd taken with him golfing that he had had at the pool day before. OUCH.
Going to try and continue the summer for one more weekend as long as the weather stays nice. The Beach is open on Sat and Coney is open on Sunday.

Vacation Ahh...the start of my vacation and I spent the weekend at the pool keeping cool. I think the upcoming week will not be nearly as cool, but just as sunny. Today at the pool, there was a slight incident, however. But I got lucky, and no one else saw. :-) I went down the slide and had not bothered to put my straps back up. Upon splashdown, I felt my top go down. I grabbed it and did not stand up and burst out laughing. The guard at the bottom of the slide was a former student of mine and she said she didn't see anything, so I think I was safe. I mentioned my incident to my pool crush and a couple other friends. My crush decided he now knew where he should be sitting when he's not in the pool. Needless to say, the next time I went down the slide, the straps were safely on my shoulders.

Being Green At long last I found a place to recycle my plastic bags. I hate to throw them away because I know they can be recycled. I reuse them at home when I can, but they pile up fast. Upon investigating the county website, they said Walmart recycles them. Since I don't shop at Walmart, this meant a special trip into the store to see if they really did. And yes they do! So I went back out to my car, grabbed all the bags I had brought with me and took them back into the store and shoved them down into the barrel. Next trip that way will mean another bunch of bags out of the house.
My dishwasher has also decided to not work real well, so I bought a new one today. With the new energy efficiency rules that were put into effect this year, and my current washer being of indeterminate age, I'm sure it will be much more energy efficient.

Rville get together It's been a couple of weeks, but I'm finally posting. I had the absolute pleasure to host rcc94 on her return to Ohio. Her plans to go to the Brazenhead coincided well with my Buffett concert plans, and we both arrived home within about 5 minutes of each other. On Sat, we met up with others: cockneyrebel, misskitty2, clemsonfan, and butter, Chris and drbonner. Off we went to the Cubs game, and while I was in the minority of our little group, I was definitely in a majority in the ballpark, and even got rcc94 and clemsonfan to clap along with me at times! After the game, we headed back to chez CR for a bit and off to Covington we went, just briefly. Returning to Newport, we sat around and many played Guitar Hero. Rcc94 kicked some butt on the game, and almost became an addict. Toward the very end of the evening, drbonner and I discovered we'd grown up in the same neighborhood, only a street apart. And our parents still live there. A small world. After a nice sleep-in on Sunday, rcc94 got dragged to the pool with me for a couple of hours, and even got to meet my pool crush. After a late lunch at Frisch's, rcc94 headed back to Dayton for her flight home. It was quite a fun weekend.
The following weekend, I headed off to Philadelphia for an annual weekend with some friends I met on a listserv almost 15 years ago. It was a very low-key weekend, floating in the pool, listening to mix tapes, eating and drinking. We decided to move up in the world of technology and next year, our mixes will be on CD.

Slip Sliding Away I had my doubts, but our new community pool opened up as scheduled on Saturday. They had a ribbon cutting/dedication at 11 on Sat. I did attend, and discovered my name was even in the program. After the hoopla, the pool opened, and I enjoyed a sunny afternoon. When adult swim was finally called, all the adults went up/down the slide. It was the best. I could do it all day long and figured that would be a workout from just walking up the stairs each time. Also spent Sunday at the pool. Happy happy. Looking forward to bringing my water walkers and walking against the current in the current channel. Little disappointed in the guards behaviors/lack of responsibility....this would not have happened last year. Even my pool crush commented on the poor job he thought they were doing. Hopefully things will improve, otherwise I'll be documenting with my camera and calling the board of health.
